The Championship, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, will consist of three rounds, offered at both 3′ and 3’3″ with riders choosing the height at which their horses compete. All horses compete in the first two rounds, in which they receive numerical scores. The 30 horses with the highest combined scores from the first two rounds of competition advance to the third round where they will start with a clean slate.
Additional prizes for Pre-Green Incentive Championship include the Best Turned Out Award, presented by Shapley’s, and a Style of Riding Award, presented by Bill Rube. The overall Champion will also receive a one-year free lease on a two horse trailer provided by KY Lake Trailer Sales and Sundowner, a cooler from The Clothes Horse, a Charles Owen Helmet, Professional’s Choice Pro Mesh Sport Boots, a jacket, a saddlepad, a certificate from SmartPak, a gold medal and a keeper trophy.
Beginning Friday, August 14 the International Hunter Derby Championship will kick-off in the Rolex Stadium with 86 horse and rider combinations competing in the Classic Hunter round. The week will culminate on Saturday evening, August 15, under the lights of the Rolex Stadium, with the exciting Handy Hunter round. The competition format will see all 86 entries compete over a Classic Hunter course featuring International Hunter Derby-style fences, including multiple height options in the first phase of competition. For the second phase of competition, riders will be grouped into two tiers based on their amount of Derby money won. A rider’s tier is based on the rider’s standing on the International Hunter Derby Lifetime Rider Money list as of December 1, 2014. Tier I riders and any horse placing in the top 20 of the Classic Hunter round will compete in Section A. The top 20 Tier II horse and rider combinations will compete in Section B. Riders will then compete in a Handy Round to determine the overall champion for Section A and Section B.
Additionally, the $10,000 Derby Challenge, held the afternoon of August 15 and presented by Moyer Farm, allows riders that did not qualify for either Section A or Section B Handy Round to take home a substantial amount of prize money. USHJA extends a special thank you to Dietrich Equine Insurance, the major sponsor of the International Hunter Derby Series and Championship.
While exhibitors will be earning significant prize money, spectators will also have the chance to win prizes during the International Hunter Derby Championship. Saturday night, August 15, will not only play host to the Handy Hunter round but also USHJA Barn Night. Spectators will have the ability to watch the top hunter riders in the country for the International Hunter Derby Championship title, as well as a chance to win a $500 SmartPak shopping spree, official Breeder’s Cup merchandise, and three USHJA Prize Packages! To enter for a chance to win, barns can stop by the USHJA Booth located on the concourse level of the Rolex Stadium beginning at 6:00 pm on Saturday, August 15 to enter the drawing. The barns with the most participants have a higher chance of winning!
