Lake Placid Horse Shows Rename Jumper Annex In Honor of Show Jumping Legend Gene Mische

Competitors at the Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows will notice a new name on one of the rings this coming season. The jumper annex has recently been renamed the E.R. Mische Jumper Ring, in honor of the late Gene Mische, one of the founders of the Lake Placid Horse Shows and considered by many “The Godfather” of Show Jumping in the United States.

The renaming is due in part to a generous donation made by the Morrissey Family, owners of Stadium Jumping, Inc. The company was founded by Mische and is the competition manager of the Lake Placid Horse Shows. The ring will be officially dedicated with a mounted plaque commemorating Mische and will host some of the nation’s top jumper horses and riders during the Lake Placid Horse Show on June 28 – July 3 and the I Love New York Horse Show on July 5-10.

“The Lake Placid Horse Shows, and the world of show jumping, owe a great deal to Gene Mische,” said Richard M. Feldman, Chairman of the Lake Placid Horse Show Association. “This is just one of the ways we are showing our appreciation for all that Gene did for us.

“I want to thank Michael Morrissey and the Stadium Jumping, Inc. family for all the support they have given us over the years and for allowing us to join them in recognizing and honoring Gene Mische,” stated Feldman.

“We have learned a lot through Gene and owe much of our success to him. The whole Morrissey Family has followed in Gene’s footsteps and we couldn’t be more proud,” said Morrissey.  “Gene was involved with Lake placid from the start and it always held a special place in his heart.  My family and I feel that Lake Placid is a perfect place to honor him.”

Starting his equestrian career as a rider and trainer, Mische helped found the Lake Placid Horse Show with Ruth Newberry in 1970. Eight years later, Mische helped create the I Love New York Horse Show. He served as a member of the Lake Placid Horse Show Association Board of Directors and Manager of the Lake Placid Horse Shows for almost four decades, and was a major driving force behind the dramatic growth in the popularity of show jumping in the United States.

In addition to serving on the Lake Placid Horse Show Association Board of Directors, Mische also served as chairman of the American Grandprix Association, Show Jumping Hall of Fame and the National Horse Show. He managed some of the nation’s most prestigious equestrian competitions such as the Budweiser American Invitational, American Grandprix Association National Jumper Championships and American Gold Cup.

“I hope that when they judge me, they look at the overall contributions I’ve made, and that Stadium Jumping has made, to the sport and to the industry,” Mische said before he died in 2010. “I think there are so many contributions that we’ve made to the sport over the years. I’d be happy to be remembered for any one of them. I feel that I’ve been blessed to be part of this great sport and I was able to do what I did.”

The Lake Placid Horse Shows will run from June 28 – July 10. Both shows are USEF ‘AA’ rated for Hunters and 6* rating for Jumpers.  The Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows are awarding over $500,000 in prize money!
