|Continues Support of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles|
The Portuguese Bend National Horse Show (Sep 9-11), held at Ernie Howlett Park in Rolling Hills Estates, California, has been providing hometown fun and friendly competition for 59 years. The show is a benefit for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), and this year’s proceeds benefit the CHLA Associates Sarcoma Program Chair. The Sarcoma Program within the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases is working to improve the outcome for children battling this aggressive form of childhood cancer.
“Taking the Reins of Hope,” this year’s show theme, honors the incredible staff of CHLA who give hope every day. The doctors, nurses, and support staff work tirelessly to help and heal all who come to them–and give the gift of hope of a better life for their patients and families. Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital members are honored to support the amazing accomplishments of the hospital through their donations.
“Through participation in the show, our exhibitors and their families are helping improve the lives of children with some of the most serious health issues,” says 2016 horse show chair Kate Cocke. “They are giving hope. We are so appreciative that they choose to come to our show!”

PBNHS is offering several new classes this year, including the $2,500 Children’s-Adult/Amateur Jumper Classic, held in memory of Georgia Storm Claessens. They will continue to offer their popular $15,000 Seahorse Open Jumper Classic as well as the $10,000 Barby Hartwig Hereford Junior-Amateur/Owner Jumper Classic. For the hunters, the show has added the $500 Windsor Stables Children’s/Adult Amateur Hunter Classic in addition to the popular $2,000 Junior/Amateur Owner Hunter Classic. In keeping with the show’s spirit of family fun, little ones can participate in the new lead line class or the new walk-trot section.
The Portuguese Bend National Horse Show has been the home of the PCHA 14 and Under Horsemanship Final (Tuffli Family Foundation, 2016 sponsor) for 29 years and the PCHA Victor Hugo-Vidal Adult Horsemanship Final (Pat and Rich Lucy, 2016 sponsor) for five years. Participants are honored at the show and enjoy fantastic gifts and awards.
In addition to the exciting horse show classes, there are numerous volunteer-staffed food booths and family friendly activities such as the children’s booth and play area. This year’s honored judges are Scott Hofstetter, John Roper and Meg Schulman, and the course designer is Michael Roy Curtis.
“Putting together the PBNHS is a multi-generational PCCH family labor of love,” Kate adds. “Our members and families work tirelessly all year to put together what we feel is a very special show. We were proud to be awarded the 2015 United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) Member’s Choice Award. We feel that this award is a testament to the PCCH volunteer members’ special attention to our exhibitors and spectators alike, in our efforts to make everyone feel welcome and valued. We are also proud that the success of the show has supported PCCH’s efforts in raising over $14 million for CHLA.”
