BY CANDACE FITZGERALD
I recently sat down with Dana Miller, Equestrian Stylist and Partner at Chagrin Saddlery, after her annual trip to the AETA trade show. We discussed what’s new in equestrian style, what’s hot in all categories and what to look for in 2017. AETA featured everything from bold and bright to the more classic and contemporary style that has become standard attire in the equestrian world. Look for spring colors to
include an array of “Lily Pulitzer” inspired pattern and color. Heading into autumn, look for jewel tones, specifically navy and burgundy.

HUNT COAT HIGHLIGHTS

From custom made to off the rack, there are so many exciting new options. The washable wool line of hunt coats from Winston Equestrian is constructed from an extremely lightweight, breathable wool and can be fully customized with a variety of trims and
options. The newly introduced line of Ego7 apparel includes a hunt coat (seen in the first photo above) which features light technical fabric, incredible style, button holes for your number, and a removable white cuff that buttons in, making a long sleeve show shirt
unnecessary. RJ Classics is a perennial favorite with their Washington, Monterrey and Shore (kids) hunt coats offering a perfect fit for every age and body type.
BEST OF BREECHES
Light technical fabric combined with incredible fit continues to be the goal for breech manufacturers. They are opting for subtle details to differentiate their brands – colored buttons, a bit of bling, pockets, zippers, stitching – all of these elements are being employed to give each breech their own look. The higher end brands have even incorporated subtle branding on the leg through contrasting color, tabs, fabrics, and discreet use of logos.

BOOTS & HELMETS
Custom boots are still all the rage, but from fit to style, this season’s off the shelf boots have it all. Manufacturers have expanded their boot collections so that there are options galore, ready to fit riders of every shape and size from short to extra tall, extra slim to extra wide. New for 2017 is additional detailing added to classic stock boots, giving them the appearance of a custom boot. Sleek styling and accent piping stood out, with brown making an appearance as a big color for 2017. Prices for boots vary, but there are many wonderful options under $499.
Not to be left out, helmets were a major player in the fashion scene for 2017. Matte finish helmets were everywhere and micro suede continues to maintain its popularity. The choice of styles was vast, offering removable/washable liners, seemingly endless customization options, increased ventilation, and comfort with the most up-to-date safety certifications.
Individual style really comes into play with helmets. While hunters must be more conservative, the jumpers have truly taken customization to the next level. Leather, snakeskin, crystals, color, and patterns are just a few of the elements we saw incorporated into helmets.
Samshield makes a statement with their Miss Shield, Shadowmatt, Premium, and Rose Gold styles. Accented helmets are making a big entrance in 2017.
Customization aside, the Italians have officially arrived in the helmet game with KASK and KEP helmets being just a few of the new brands on the scene.
TRENDS IN SHOW & SCHOOLING SHIRTS
Detail, color, and fabric is the new differentiator – white tuxedo front shirts with contrasting body, color blocked sides, and placket shirts with bursts of color on the inside of collar and cuffs. Hidden details allow riders to express themselves while still maintaining the look of
a traditional show shirt. Coolmax and Bamboo fabrics and features like mesh sleeves are just a few innovations in shirt design and manufacturing intended to keep riders cool in the saddle. Giving back: The Essex Performance “Danny & Ron’s Rescue” show shirt is easily one of the most popular show shirts of the year. Essex Classics makes a donation to this rescue with the purchase of each show shirt. See one and you will immediately be sold on the adorable puppy trim.

BELTS

Belts are truly a pivotal piece for creative expression. There are just so many to choose from. We encourage customers to have fun with them when schooling and stay conservative when entering the show ring
Manufacturers seem to be moving away from the wider 2″ standard, with thinner 1.5″ belts making a strong comeback.
STYLE NOTES FOR 2017:
• Simultaneously classic yet different, Ruespari belts are everywhere.
• Made from stretch canvas in an array of colors and under $40, the Hunt Club Derby belt is a great option.
• Hunter/Jumper and polo worlds unite through fashion with Tato belts. Their iconic South American design features leather belts with hand stitched waxed threading in a variety of colors and patterns, which can now can be seen in all rings all across the country.
• Finally, as always, the 2″ quilted “C” belt from The Tailored Sportsman in black is the go-to belt of the Hunter/Jumper world. Italian leather and made to fit in a wide belt loop, the design of this belt is simply flawless.
The athleisure trend has added comfort, style and convenience to the equestrian fashion world, making this an exciting year. Manufacturers have taken a cue from the mainstream fashion industry by incorporating similar athletic crossover options into their lines. You’re going to love what you see (and wear) in 2017.
