The Best Horse Show Makeup

By Intern Lauren Aubert

Whether you love it or hate it, makeup (or skin care) plays an important part in any person’s life. From an ordinary day at school to your favorite horse show venue, it helps you look your best when you are looking for that extra sparkle. I am no makeup expert, but I love to experiment with different brands and shades to obtain the perfect look. Here are a few of my favorite products that I use when I want to look a little extra fancy for my equitation or hunter classes:

Foundation: For any equestrian athlete, you will know that when summer comes and the weather heats up, makeup starts to melt when you sweat, irritating your skin as it drips down your face. The right foundation is crucial when riding in the heat. On my face, I am in love with the products from Jane Iredale. I have sensitive skin, and their makeup doesn’t make me break out after I take it off. I like to keep my foundation light and natural when I show. I apply the PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation with one of their applicator sponges. This allows me to get full coverage without any fallout or an uneven appearance. My skin ranges from light in the winter to medium in the summer when I’m outdoors more, so I prefer the shades Warm Silk and Golden Glow. This product is not cheap, but it is natural and non-irritating so it is definitely worth the purchase, and it does not melt in the hot weather! Just make sure to buy a compact if it is your first time buying the item!

Mascara: Mascara can either be an amazing or terrible product for me to use while riding. If it’s hot out, the wrong product can slowly shift down until it is smudged on my lower eyelid, and if my eyes start to itch, it’s over. I generally stay away from most waterproof mascaras because they are extremely hard to remove, and if I mess up with the wand, it is hard to take off the mistake and start over. For a long-lashed look, the signature Too Faced deluxe mascara is hard to beat (the original mascara is pictured, but the deluxe is linked above). It separates your lashes when applied, and it gives you the appearance of fuller, darker lashes. I have used other mascaras in the past, but this one is my all-time favorite.

Lip color: Finally, I love a little tinted lip balm and gloss to top off my show-ready look, and I like to keep some in my show backpack or trunk to reapply between rounds. For a little splash of color, my favorite product is the Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon. This helps my lips recover, because they always get chapped during a long day of riding and photographing at a show, especially in the wind. It provides relief from chapped lips and provides protection against the sun and elements that one might experience while riding or walking around the showgrounds. My favorite shades are Sedona Sands and Hawaiian Smolder, giving my lips a pretty pink color that stands out just enough to be noticed. If I am in the mood for lip gloss I love applying a little BareMinerals Marvelous Moxie lip gloss over any neutral lip balm because it provides full coverage and looks great for showing during the day and barn dinners at night.

So here you have it, some of my favorite products for achieving the perfect amount of show ring glamour! The right products can give that little bit of sparkle you felt like you were missing before, and can be fun to work with as well. Everyone’s skin is different, so keep trying out different products and routines until you find the one that suits you best.
