How To Make Rainbow Unicorn Slime

By TPH Intern Izzy Feinstein

As the obsession of mixing glue, borax, water, and other materials together to form “slime” swept the nation this past summer, it also took over horse shows. From USEF Pony Finals to local shows, young entrepreneurs could be spotted delivering homemade slime to their pint-sized pony riding customers. From traditional slime made with borax solution and glue to “iceberg” and “cream cheese” slimes, the possibilities are endless for creating your own. Learn how to make Rainbow Unicorn Slime by following the tutorial below!

What You Will Need:

  • Elmer’s Glue (Glue-All Multipurpose Glue or School Glue work best)
  • Borax
  • Water
  • Food Coloring
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Measuring Cup
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Plastic Spoons
  • Plastic/Paper Plates (if using paper, make sure they have a wax coating)
  • Plastic Bag OR Sealable Container (for storage)

Step One:

Prepare your activator solution by mixing approximately one teaspoon of Borax powder with one cup of water. Shake well to make sure it is thoroughly dissolved.

Pro Tip: store your solution in an empty Elmer’s glue bottle

I use an empty Elmer’s glue bottle to store my activator

Step Two:

Pour approximately ¼ to ⅓ cup of Elmer’s glue into your mixing bowl. Add 1 squeeze of red or pink food coloring and mix it into the glue using your plastic spoon.

Step Three:

Squirt activator into the mixing bowl until your slime begins to form in a ball around your spoon.

Pro Tip: Only squirt in a small amount at a time. A little goes a LONG way.

Step Four:

Remove your slime from the bowl and begin kneading it in your hands/on your plate until it no longer sticks to your hands. If needed, add more borax solution to the slime, but make sure you do not add too much- if you do your slime will become “overactivated”. Use your slime to pick up any excess slime from your hands, spoon, bowl, and plate.

Step Five:

Repeat steps one through four and make a blue slime, yellow slime, green slime, and white slime

Step Six:

Roll your slimes as even as possible and line them up as pictured below

Step Seven:

Braid or cross the rolled slimes together.

Step Eight:

Start on one short end and roll your slime together into a ball.

Step Nine:

Flatten out your ball and sprinkle glitter on top! I chose silver, but you can choose any color you feel would look best! Fold your slime over until the glitter is evenly spread.

Step Ten:

Play with your slime! For best results, store your slime in a plastic bag or sealable container.
