New Year, New Snacks: Healthy Snacks for the Busy Equestrian

A lot of people make New Year’s resolutions to eat healthier. For equestrians, finding good snacks that are portable enough to be crammed in a backpack, but are also delicious and reasonably healthy, is a non-stop search. Here are some of my recent favourites.

Halfpops Curiously Crunchy Popcorn
These are exactly what they sound like! You know those derpy kernels, at the bottom of the popcorn bowl, that are only a little bit popped, but you fight your family for? Imagine a WHOLE BAG of these delicious mistakes. My favourite flavour is the Aged White Cheddar.

Three Farmers Pea Pops
I don’t like peas, so I didn’t expect to like these… but they’re delicious! These toasted green peas are great as a snack, but I also really love them on top of salads, instead of croutons. They are low fat, high fibre, gluten free, nut free, non-GMO and vegan, so they’re resolution-friendly. My favourite flavour is Wild Ranch.

Way Better Snacks Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips
These tortilla chips have a slightly different texture than traditional tortilla chips, but they are yummy. They have a salty sweet vibe that curbs most snack cravings, and the sprouted quinoa and chia make them crunchy and filling. I really love mine with some fresh salsa and a good movie on Netflix. Just be warned: If you take them to the barn, take the whole bag. You’ll munch them down in no time in-between rides.

Annie’s Homegrown Rice Pasta & Cheddar Microwavable Mac & Cheese Cup
These mac and cheese cups are great for the barn. They cook up quickly, and are the perfect size to eat on the run. They get rid of that starving feeling, but aren’t such a big serving that they make you sleepy. They are available with traditional wheat pasta too, but I like the rice pasta because it’s a little lighter in my tummy right before a ride.

Cocomels Coconut Caramels
If you try to take my Cocomels, you’re dead to me. The first time I tried the Sea Salt flavour, I almost lost my mind, they are so delicious. Cocomels are caramels made with coconut milk instead of dairy. They’re candy, but a better choice than most: Organic, vegan, gluten free, corn syrup free, soy free and non-GMO. If you want to keep a stash of sweets in your barn jacket, these are an amazing choice.

I live in Ontario, Canada, so I order all of these items from They offer free shipping over $35 and are fairly quick. If you live in the United States, most healthy food stores, websites, or even Amazon would have them. Happy 2018 and happy snacking!
