USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge September 1 Deadline Fast Approaching

Young equestrians encouraged to put horsemanship knowledge to the test for a chance to earn great prizes and compete at HQC Nationals

Lexington, Ky.— –August 27, 2018 — -The deadline to participate in the 2018 USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge, presented by The Plaid Horse, is Saturday, September 1. Equestrians, ages 21 and under, are encouraged to take the online quiz challenge for a chance to compete at the 2018 USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge Nationals, a multi-phase event where finalists can earn grant money, prizes, and participate in a variety of hands-on educational seminars.

Already, more than 300 young equestrians have completed the Level One Quiz, and more than 90 have completed the Level Two Quiz. Of those who score a 90 percent or higher on Level Two, 24 will be invited to compete at the prestigious HQC Nationals, which runs alongside the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program National Training Session and includes in-person horsemanship education, the opportunity to audit the EAP session, and a chance to win great prizes and grant money.

The University of Findlay will play host to the 2018 HQC Nationals, November 9-11, in Findlay, Ohio. The competition consists of a written exam, a horsemanship/identification exam, and a final hands-on practicum that requires participants to demonstrate their mastery of practical horsemanship knowledge. The overall champion will receive a $2,000 grant for training and education, provided by the USHJA Foundation, a Charles Owen helmet, a CWD halter, a pair of Parlanti International paddock boots and a gold medal. Reserve champion will receive a $1,500 grant, a Charles Owen helmet and a silver medal. Third overall will receive a $500 grant, a Charles Owen helmet and a bronze medal. Additional awards will be given to the highest scoring individuals in each phase of testing.

To qualify for HQC Nationals, participants must register and complete two online horsemanship quizzes, which consist of multiple-choice and true/false questions, by September 1. A score of 80 percent or higher must be achieved on the Level One Quiz to be eligible for the Level Two Quiz. A score of 90 percent or higher must be achieved on the Level Two Quiz to be eligible for selection for HQC Nationals. The top two scoring individuals in each zone will be invited to participate at Nationals.
 
In addition to putting their horsemanship knowledge to the ultimate test, educational opportunities and seminars will also be available for Nationals participants, including a demonstration of equine anatomy in motion, equine appraisal, equine massage and equine nutrition.
 
Free resources are available to encourage and assist participants in preparing for the online quizzes including a practice quiz and a study guide. The official study guide covers topics that include horse identification, anatomy, nutrition, riding theory and welfare, and it is available to everyone interested in expanding their equine knowledge, not just HQC participants. Additionally, the online practice quiz is open to USHJA members of all ages.
