Founded in 2005, GallopNYC is a forward-looking 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that offers the proven benefits of therapeutic horsemanship to children and adults in New York City with developmental, emotional, social and physical challenges. Our mission is to ensure that every child with a disability in New York City has access to therapeutic horseback riding. We use therapeutic horsemanship to help riders in NYC with disabilities walk, talk, and learn, inspiring them to live their lives as fully, productively, and independently as possible. Through weekly riding sessions with PATH Int’l certified instructors, we help riders set and achieve measurable developmental, emotional, social, and physical skill goals (e.g., balance, coordination, muscle tone, attention span, self-confidence, social interaction, responsibility). Our committed staff of 49, including 23 PATH Int’l Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors, is assisted by almost 1000 trained, compassionate volunteers and a herd of about 40 horses.
Most riders that GallopNYC serves are from moderate or low-income households. GallopNYC makes the benefits of therapeutic riding widely available by setting the participant fee for riding significantly below our cost – that means that 100% of our ridership is supported financially, even those that pay for lessons. In addition, 35% of our riders pay no fee and of the riders that are able to pay a fee 65% pay a reduced amount due to financial need. We are proud to have never turned away a rider because of an inability to pay.
We currently provide 600+ therapeutic riding lessons per week at four locations. We also have programs for Veterans, Senior Adults, and we have a Youth Development program that teaches job skills to older teens/young adults with disabilities to help them prepare to for work and volunteer jobs.
