All About the Saratoga Race Course

If there is anything, the US has plenty of its horse racing tracks. Any enthusiasts of horse racing – those who watch the races for fun or bet on them – will likely recognise the name of Saratoga, one of the oldest horse racecourses of its kind throughout the world.

However, while you may have seen plenty of races here over the years – and you may have even been to the track yourself – how much do you actually know about the Saratoga?

Older Than You Think!

To examine the Saratoga’s roots, we have to dig deep. Believe it or not, the region in which the racecourse is based was popular with Native Americans dating all the way back to the 1300s.

However, it was of course with the development of Saratoga Springs, NY, when we first started seeing horse racing here. Many people see Saratoga as something of a special, maybe even mystical location.

That, of course, may well lend itself to the sense of luck people try to harness when they first visit the course! If you’re a horse racing newbie taking time away from, for example, there are few luckier locations to head to first.

It was in 1863 when the first horse racing meet was set up in Saratoga. This race was a thoroughbred meet, and owing to its immense popularity, more meets were organised, and eventually, John Morrisey would go on to buy a huge plot of land to set up a racecourse. The rest – as they say – is history!

That’s Not All!

Saratoga is one of the most popular racecourses in the region, and for a good reason. Generally, there are race calendars of up to 40 races taking place each year. It’s also become a hugely popular tourist destination for those intrigued about the history of racing in the US, as well as in general.

Believe it or not, it was at Saratoga where one of racing’s most popular terms and idioms comes from. It’s here where a horse with a prophetic name managed to beat Man O’War at the Sanford Stakes in 1913.

What was prophetic about this horse? It was called Upset – and that’s a term we still use to describe unexpected race outcomes to this day!

The Saratoga race course is world-renowned. In fact, it’s well-regarded and well-loved outside of the world of racing, too. Sports Illustrated even named it one of the top ten sporting venues from 1900 to 1999. That’s an incredible accolade.

Ever Been to Saratoga?

Saratoga race course always promises to be a great day out. Not only is it a place with decades of history behind it, but it’s also set up as a family resort with plenty of dining facilities.

It’s thought to be the oldest sporting stadium or venue of its kind in the US. Therefore, any visit you make here is always likely to feel that little bit special. If you’ve never been to the races in NY before, Saratoga is sure to be the perfect first port of call.
