Eva Mackenzie is a young, rising star in all three rings. At just 12 years old, she currently sits at the top of the overall standings for the THIS National Children’s Medal.
“I started riding four years ago. I started when I was eight years old with a small pony named Sundown,” says Mackenzie. “He taught me a lot, and I still have him—he’s doing pony lessons at the barn. He was the perfect teacher, and he led me up to the small pony division.”
Mackenzie currently competes in the THIS Children’s Medal, 3’3” equitation medals, 3’6” junior hunter division, and the low junior jumpers. She has two equitation horses, Demonia GS Z and Vagrant Z, a hunter named Iladin Du Rouet, and her jumpers Capall, Celine H, and Cigale de Riverland.
Over the course of WEF 2022, she topped the THIS Children’s Medal three times with additional top ribbons in the class. During WEF 11, Mackenzie and Demonia GS Z won the THIS Children’s Medal 14 & Under with a score of 90.
“Demonia is a really sweet horse. She is really fun to ride, because has a high head carriage and likes to stay in front of my leg, so she takes me to the jumps,” says Mackenzie. “Scoring a 90 in one of my first THIS Children’s Medal classes with Demonia has been one of my biggest accomplishments.”
“I really like doing the tests in the THIS Children’s Medal—I have to know my jump numbers and really come up with a plan,” she continued. “The equitation teaches me a lot. I’ve learned how to plan my courses more, and when there’s tough turns, I really think about how to execute them. I’m really focused on getting my position stronger and holding myself over the jumps.”
Mackenzie is looking forward to competing in the THIS Children’s Medal Championship and hopes to move up to the 3’6” equitation and within the junior jumper division.
