Do you own a pet? Do you ever wonder what other animals can be kept as companions by other pet owners?

There are a lot of animals that are taken care of by their owners, such as dogs, cats, and rabbits. But did you know that some people also take care of more unique animals? Some of these might surprise you!

Below are five animals that you don’t see every day that can also be kept as pets, along with some fun facts about them!

1. Axolotls

You may have heard of these awfully cute sea creatures. Axolotls are known as Mexican walking fish as they’re native to Mexico. However, they’re not fish at all, but aquatic salamanders!

These animals are known to be easy to take care of. They live up to 15 years if taken care of properly. Their diet consists of small fish, worms, tadpoles, and insects.

As of today, only eight types of Axolotls exist:

  1. Firefly
  2. Black Melanoid
  3. Lavender
  4. White Albino
  5. Golden Albino
  6. Copper
  7. Leucistic
  8. Copper

Although these creatures can be kept as pets, they’re critically endangered due to habitat loss and overfishing. The vast majority of pet axolotls were bred in captivity in order to be studied.

2. Horses

You already know that a horse can be kept as a pet – but you don’t have to own a country estate to keep a horse! These majestic animals serve as wonderful companions and they bond quickly with their owners.

Horses can be difficult to provide for if the owner doesn’t have a big open space, a barn, or a stable, which is why many people choose to keep their pet horses in commercial stables that are maintained with loving care.

These majestic animals are great companions, but you should understand the commitment you’re undertaking before buying a horse and find an amazing stable nearby.

3. Parrots

Parrots are also unique animals that can be kept as pets. These birds might be easy to take care of, but they also require a lot of time and dedication in giving them the proper care they need.

There are different types of parrots that can be kept as pets. For example, people may keep cockatiels, conures, macaws, or budgies. Lifespans are dependent on the type of bird, as is the ability to mimicspeech. Many of the most articulate parrots are either endangered, extremely expensive, or both.

4. Fennec Foxes

Also known as a desert fox, the Fennec fox is native to parts of North Africa and the Sahara desert. Although these animals are sometimes kept as pets, they are not easy to take care of.

These foxes are nocturnal, meaning that they’re usually asleep when their owner is awake. They’re also not very cuddly animals as they are startled easily.

They’re about the size of a chihuahua and live up to 11 years under the care of an owner.

5. Degus

The degu is a rodent native to the Andes mountains in Chile. These animals live normally live in large numbers, so people who own a degu usually have other degus.

They live up to five to eight years. These animals are very social creatures and also very curious. They’re also very playful, so their owners must entertain them regularly to care for them properly.

These rodents also require a large space as their main activities include burrowing and digging tunnels.

Final Thoughts

Although these gorgeous animals can be kept pets, it’s important to take into account the long-term well-being of the animal by being prepared and knowledgeable about uncommon pets. Never just buy an animal to own it – a pet is a companion and a friend.
