With the calendar turning to 2023, attention naturally turns in the American horse racing world to the upcoming events in the year ahead.

No event on the NY horse racing calendar gets as much international and domestic traction as the Kentucky Derby and once again in 2023, it promises to be a fascinating contest.

The 149th edition of the race promises to be enthralling once more, with 2022 winner Rich Strike once again the horse to beat – in a field filled with some of the very best horses from America and beyond.

The 10 furlong race is often over in a flash, but it holds the attention of New York and the whole of America at its mercy, with horses and jockeys batting for supremacy and for their share of the $3 million prize pot – making it one of the most lucrative races in American and worldwide horse racing.

Domestically, US racing is in a very strong position – with plenty of decent results having been enjoyed by American trainers internationally in recent times.

Todd Pletcher has been at the heart of that transition in recent times and he looks to have a real Kentucky Derby contender on his hands in Forte.

3 wins from 4 outings has suggested that the 2 year old is potentially tailor made for the conditions here at the Kentucky Derby and provided it can cope with expectation, it will be heavily backed at +1000.

International trainers often converge on the Kentucky Derby with aspirations of bringing the trophy back to their homeland but one of the hot favorites in 2023 looks to be from Steven Asmussen’s yard.

Extra Anejo is an exciting prospect at just 2 years old and the running at the Kentucky Derby could be absolutely ideal.

At +1200, there is plenty of money behind the unbeaten rookie and who knows how far it can go at the biggest race on the planet.

Having just been edged out by Forte in recent times, another front runner at the 2023 Kentucky Derby is Loggins.

Brad Cox tends to train seriously quick horses and with speed of the essence at the Kentucky Derby, it looks to be a horse certainly in with a decent shot at +1800 in the early ante post markets.

Elsewhere, Signator looks to be the unknown quantity in the 2023 Kentucky Derby but it certainly a horse that has pundits and analysts talking.

Claude McGaughey remains one of the biggest and best trainers around and if he gets it right with Signator, it should be a serious contender at +2500.

Steven Asmussen will be hedging his bets somewhat too, as he has another outside shot with Echo Again – a +4500 shot that certainly has plenty of people talking.
