Our Day Farm Flourishes on BoneKare

Our Day Farm was started in 1980 by fifth-generation horseman Alex Jayne, in Elgin, IL. With horses running deep through the blood of the Jayne family, it is no surprise that his children – Maggie, Charlie, and Haylie, all quickly became ensconced in the family business. The business has taken off in the years since its inception and the trio now run the successful operation by splitting their time between their home base in Illinois and Wellington, Florida. While each sibling has a different role in the farm, Haylie will tell you that their overall goal remains the same – to develop horses and riders to their greatest potential.

Developing great potential is a process and one in which both horse and rider need to ensure they take proper care of their bodies as they develop and grow. Therefore, upon hearing of BoneKare and its benefits, it made perfect sense to the family to see if the product would be a fit for their needs.

“Our hope in using BoneKare was to find something we could easily incorporate into our daily feed program that the horses would both eat and benefit from,” explained Haylie. “We generally like to keep things simple—we’re not big into using lots of supplements or specialized feeds. However, as frequently happens, some horses had very specific problems and needed a more specialized approach. Our hope was that we’d give the select few horses that had various musculoskeletal issues a better chance at a healthier and more prolonged career.”

What started as a targeted approach to managing several specific horses in their show program quickly progressed to incorporating the product into multiple facets of their facility including their large breeding program. With an operation approximately 40 horses deep between mares and foals, the task of keeping all horses sound and fit is a daily challenge.

“Raising horses with clean legs can be a challenge when you’re doing it on a large scale while also trying to let them be horses,” Haylie added. “Some young horses grow too fast, some are accident prone, and some are just born with issues. We were hopeful that BoneKare might help our young stock get through their developmental years with healthy bones and minimize the risk of issues as they grow.”

In the years since starting their string on the feeding program, the family at Our Day Farm has reaped multiple benefits from the product that have made them strong #bonekarebelievers.

“We had a young horse a few years back that a client had bred and put into training with us as a four year old. It was an absolute giant, the kind you know is likely going to have some kind of structural issue because they’ve grown too fast,” Haylie described. “The horse struggled with soundness pretty early on and we determined that he had a hairline fracture in one of his knees. When the horse had no change to his X-rays after resting, we started giving him BoneKare in hopes of giving him a fighting chance at being sound. Not only did he heal, but he went on to have a normal career as a show horse.

Another horse that absolutely benefitted from BoneKare was a hunter we had a few years back,” she continued. “It had a splint on one of its front legs that was very angry and not getting better despite going to the saltwater spa every day, routine shockwave therapy, and rest. When advanced imaging revealed that surgery wasn’t an option and that the splint was 100% an isolated problem and not affecting the surrounding tendons, we decided to try BoneKare. Within a few months the horse was back to competing without further issue—the splint no longer was a problem. It became very clear in that horse’s case that BoneKare was vital in his recovery.”
