10 Questions for New Riders

BY Hannah Fichter

Stepping into the horse world is an exciting experience, but it can also be nerve-wracking, making you wonder if this new hobby is going to be your cup of tea.

Before you hop in the stirrups, here are ten questions you should ask your trainer to ensure this new adventure is right for you.

What’s the Time Commitment?

Ask your trainer about the frequency of lessons, the appropriate amount of practice time, and if there are any expectations for participation in events or competitions.

What Can I Expect From the First Few Lessons?

It’s important to have a clear idea of what the initial stages of your riding journey will look like. Ask your trainer to outline the first few lessons.

How Do You Handle Safety?

Safety should always be a top priority in any sport, and riding is no exception. Ask your trainer about the safety measures in place, the risks involved, how often accidents happen, and how they’re handled.

What are the costs involved?

Horse riding can be a costly hobby. Find out about the costs of lessons, equipment, and potential horse leasing or ownership. Knowing the financial commitment upfront can help you decide if it’s feasible.

Do I Need Any Special Equipment?

Ask your trainer if there’s anything specific you need to purchase. From helmets to riding boots, each item can contribute to your safety and comfort.

How Often Should I Take Lessons?

Consistency is the key to mastering any new skill. Find out how often your trainer suggests you should take lessons to make consistent progress. This will help you plan and budget accordingly.

Can anyone learn to ride?

Some people might worry they’re too old, too young, or not fit enough. Ask your trainer about any physical requirements or age limits.

What Type of Horse Will I Be Riding?

Not all horses are created equal. Some may be gentle and great for beginners, while others might be more challenging. It’s important to ask about the horse you’ll be riding, their temperament, and whether they’re suitable for your skill level.

Can You Help Me Overcome My Fears?

Feeling a little nervous is completely normal when starting out. Your trainer should be able to help you address any fears or apprehensions you might have. Their guidance can make your journey into riding a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.

What’s the most rewarding part of horse riding?

Finally, ask your trainer about the joys of riding. Their answer will likely give you a glimpse into the passion and dedication that riding sparks.

Remember, finding the right fit with your trainer is the key to a successful riding journey. So don’t shy away from asking these questions. After all, this is the start of an exciting new chapter in your life. Happy riding!
