Sporting events that take place year after year are of great popular interest. Whether as a professional or amateur athlete or even as a spectator, the truth is that sport in all its forms is a great way to interact with people and the world.
A great example of this is horse racing, a sport that can be traced back to ancient times and which demands great discipline and horsemanship on the part of the jockey and requires a great understanding between man and horse.
Horse racing generally takes place in closed circuits known as racetracks, and some of them are annual events that summon a large number of sportsmen, spectators, and fans who watch minute by minute and enjoy horse racing odds, taking advantage of the occasion to place their horse bets.
What are the major horse racing events?
As is usually the case with all sporting activities, horse races in different parts of the world enjoy different levels of attendance. However, several events stand out for their longevity, the challenges they pose, or other reasons. Here are the seven most illustrious events in this category.
The Aintree Grand National
This equestrian competition is one of the most important in the United Kingdom. Held, as its name suggests, at the Aintree racecourse in the city of Liverpool, the origins of this competition can be traced as far back as the 18th century. The first official edition of the Aintree Grand National was held in 1839.
The Melbourne Cup
As its name suggests, this horse race occurs in Melbourne, Australia. It is a competition with a long-standing tradition: the first edition was held in 1861. Traditionally, it is held on the first Tuesday of every November, and three-year-old thoroughbred horses can compete in it.
The Kentucky Derby
It almost always takes place on the first Saturday in May. The Kentucky Derby takes place in the city of Louisville, in the state of Kentucky in the United States. This race also focuses on three-year-old thoroughbred horses, which are two kilometers long. It is popularly known as “the race of the roses” because the winner is adorned with a blanket of these flowers. Secretariat, the legendary horse, holds the record for the fastest time in this race.
This event takes place every year in New York. Also known as “the champion’s test,” it is a 2,400-meter race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses. It usually takes place on the second Saturday in June, five weeks after the Kentucky Derby. The first edition of this race is ancient: it took place in 1867.
The Arc de Triomphe Prize
Created in 1920, this race takes place in Paris, France. The international event gathers the best thoroughbred horses and their celebrated jockeys in the world. It is one of the wealthiest races in the world, and its prestige reaches practically all nations. It has millions of spectators across the globe.
The Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes
Although much younger than other races on this list, what makes the Pegasus World Cup stand out from other similar events is the grandeur of its purse. Since its inauguration in 2017, the Pegasus World Cup has qualified several times as the richest race in the world. This race is 9 furlongs long (just over 1,800 meters) and accepts thoroughbred horses from four years of age.
Dubai World Cup
This race, held in the Arab Emirates since 1996, is among the richest in the world. With an international call, it is famous for having a wide range of participants, where Spanish-speaking winners stand out. Like almost all the events on this list, it is exclusively for thoroughbreds, and from 2010 onwards, it has been held at the Meydan Racecourse.
How do people establish the value of a horse?
Horses signify power through their elegance, strength, and speed. This meaning is linked to the advancement of humans for a long time, both for work and for war.
Famous horses accompanied troops in earlier times, served as cargo haulers, or were used, and are used, in sport. Hence, an equine breed generally has high costs on the international market.
The evaluation of a horse is based on many variables, but many of these horses will never be sold. We only rely on expert references to determine the value of the horse. That is why we also have the historical record of the horses that have been sold.
Where does the cost of expensive horses come from?
As there are many, a foal for various purposes has a high price, which only some clubs or wealthy people can pay.
Behind it is a horse-related industry that feeds on the results of races competitions, or training and breeding.
For a horse to qualify in that group of highly valued horses, it must have incredible qualities. Horses are majestic animals, experts say, endowed with astonishing physique and strength, used by men for activities as varied as pulling cars, sports, walking, and running, among many others.
Each ability, therefore, translates into a value. That is why it is possible to find very well-paid animals.
The most expensive horses ever sold in the world are Fusaichi Pegasus, Seattle Dancer, Shareef Dancer, Totilas, Green Monkey, Palloubet D’halong, , Meydan City, Snaafi Dancer, Jalil and Plavius.
