It’s Derby Time at Curragh: Date, Time, and Runners Revealed

The Irish Derby is one of the biggest horse racing spectacles to take place on the racing calendar, with it offering a level of grandeur and prestige to the winners of the race.

The race is the third classic at the Curragh, and is thought to be worth a huge €712,500 to winning connections, making it one of the most lucrative races to win.

Here, we provide you with everything you need to know about the upcoming race…

What is the Irish Derby?

One of Ireland’s biggest races, the Irish Derby will see the very best three-year-olds compete in this Grade 1 contest. It is open to colts and fillies and will see many of the same horses that competed in the Epsom Derby at the beginning of June.

The course is 1 mile and 4 furlongs in length and will test the stamina of these horses.

When is the 2024 Irish Derby run?

The 2024 Irish Derby will take place on Saturday, June 30, with the post time scheduled for 15:25 GMT. It is a race that will be televised widely, with many broadcasting the event as soon as it takes place (as well as the entire festival over the course of three days).

Which horses will be running in the 2024 Irish Derby?

Although confirmation of which horses will be competing in the 2024 Irish Derby will not happen until Thursday, June 28, it is already known that the field will be extremely competitive. As mentioned, many of the horses that ran at the recent Epsom Derby will likely be involved.

A field of 58 will be competing in the 1-mile, 4-furlong event, meaning there could be plenty of betting opportunities available to punters who are looking to try and maximize their enjoyment of this huge racing spectacle this summer.

Interestingly, the horses that finished second and third at the Epsom Derby are expected to be the main contenders for the Irish Derby.

Based on the latest horse racing odds, Ambiente Friendly is the favourite heading into the contest, having been priced at 5/4. Los Angeles is being well-backed ahead of the race and has odds of 6/4, placing him just outside the main contender.

Epsom Derby winner City of Troy will not be at the festival at Curragh on June 30, it has been confirmed. Instead, his trainer Aidan O’Brien has revealed he will be heading to Sandown the week after and competing.

Why are Ambiente Friendly and Los Angeles favoured for the 2024 Irish Derby?

Given that City of Troy was convincing in his win at the Epsom Derby (having won by 2 ¾ lengths), it’s a surprise and unfortunate for punters who were perhaps looking at him as the horse to back for the 2024 Irish Derby.

Nonetheless, there is clearly a lot of backing for both Ambiente Friendly and Los Angeles ahead of the upcoming race. Indeed, with the absence of the 2024 Epsom Derby winner, there aren’t many who believe there are other horses that would get in the way of the pair of stablemates at Curragh.

Ambiente Friendly had a solid race across 12 furlongs in his run at the beginning of the month, despite sweating heavily. He travelled very well under jockey Rab Halvin and their paring will look to try and go one better this time around. If he manages to travel as well as he did in Epsom, he’ll be a very hard act to beat. Los Angeles is another horse that is being backed, but there may be some hesitation about whether he can go the distance once again. In the previous race, the 3-year-old looked good for most of it, but found stamina to be a bit of a problem the further he progressed down the track. He lost two places two furlongs out after leading and dropped back as he was being outpaced by the two that finished ahead of him. It’s a gamble, but with the race experience under his belt, perhaps this time around might be his best shot, especially with a horse like City of Troy not being included in this race this time around.
