The Evolution of Equestrian Fashion: Balancing Tradition and Innovation

Equestrian fashion has long been shaped by its roots in tradition, reflecting the discipline and elegance of the sport. However, the demands of modern riders are pushing the boundaries of what equestrian apparel can be. Today’s riders expect more than just style—they want performance, comfort, and features that adapt to their active lifestyles.

A Legacy of Tradition

For centuries, equestrian attire has adhered to a structured aesthetic, from the polished look of tall boots to the refined design of show jackets. These elements symbolize the heritage and discipline of equestrian sports, especially in the show ring. While these traditional styles remain staples, they are evolving to incorporate modern functionality.

“Equestrian fashion is deeply tied to its history, but that doesn’t mean it can’t grow and adapt,” says Holly Habeck, a rider and the founder of equestrian apparel brand Thiandro Equestrian. “The show ring still honors its classic roots, but you’re starting to see more colors, modern fits, and updates that make apparel more practical without losing its timeless appeal.”

Tradition plays a significant role even in small details. “So much of what we do as equestrians is based on tradition, even something as simple as what side of the horse we mount from,” Holly says. “These things aren’t going away; they’re just evolving as we acquire more technology for improved performance.”

This evolution is particularly evident in schooling attire, where riders are opting for clothing that enhances their performance while remaining true to equestrian style.

The Role of Innovation

While many equestrian brands lean heavily on tradition, Thiandro Equestrian stands out by prioritizing innovation. “Equestrian apparel has lagged behind other athletic industries in terms of innovation,” Holly states. “We saw a gap for high-performing, accessible riding gear that truly meets the needs of today’s riders.”

Unlike many competitors, Thiandro Equestrian integrates advanced features that aren’t yet standard across the industry. Their riding tights are crafted with moisture-wicking fabrics, UPF 50 protection, and full-seat grip—all designed to enhance comfort and performance. Additionally, the use of zipper pockets that accommodate cell phones is a thoughtful touch that resonates with modern riders.

One of the brand’s core strengths lies in customer engagement. “We regularly poll our social media following on their favorite color combos and what styles they want to see next,” says Holly. “This ensures we’re delivering products that real riders actually want, rather than just following industry norms.”

The brand’s focus on functionality has also driven design decisions. “You can’t please everyone, and I learned that early on when working on this brand,” she reflects. “For example, there are riders who won’t wear riding leggings—a more recent innovation—and that feedback guided us to develop a zip-up breech with traditional styling but the same performance fabrics our customers love.”

Sustainability in Equestrian Fashion

One area where Thiandro Equestrian truly sets itself apart is sustainability. While sustainability is still emerging as a priority in equestrian fashion, Thiandro Equestrian is at the forefront, using eco-friendly fabrics and recycled materials in their products.

“Sustainability was a big part of developing our first collection because I knew we were going to be placing a big order, and I wanted to feel good about the designs we were putting into the world,” Holly explains. “We chose a recycled fabric blend for our Essential Riding Tights and Base Layers, which isn’t yet common in the equestrian space. It’s not perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

The brand’s commitment to sustainability reflects their belief that riders have a responsibility to protect the planet. “If we truly love riding and love our horses, we have to protect their environment,” she adds.

Meeting Modern Riders’ Needs

Modern riders need apparel that transitions seamlessly from barn chores to everyday life. This versatility has become a hallmark of Thiandro Equestrian. “One thing I love about our riding pants is that they transition so seamlessly from the barn to the gym, grocery store, or anywhere else,” Holly says. “I remember being a kid and thinking I looked like a crazy person going to the store after the barn. I never feel that way anymore.”

High-rise waistbands, sleek designs, and flattering fits make Thiandro Equestrian’s products as practical as they are stylish. Whether heading to the barn or stopping at the store afterward, riders can feel comfortable and confident in their gear. Shop versatile riding pants here.

Inclusivity is another key pillar for the brand. With sizes ranging from XS to 3XL, Thiandro Equestrian ensures that every rider can find apparel that fits and performs well, addressing a gap often overlooked in the industry. This commitment to inclusivity is a reflection of the brand’s belief that equestrianism should be accessible to all riders, regardless of size or background.

Looking Ahead

As equestrian fashion continues to evolve, Thiandro Equestrian is helping to lead the charge. By prioritizing performance, sustainability, and inclusivity, the brand is redefining what equestrian apparel can be.

“I hope our brand shows equestrians that there are companies out there listening to real riders and trying to solve their problems,” says Holly. “It’s not just big brands charging several hundred dollars for breeches anymore—you can find quality, affordable, and responsible options from smaller businesses like ours.”Whether you’re looking for traditional designs with a modern twist or innovative performance pieces, Thiandro Equestrian offers apparel that enhances every aspect of a rider’s experience.
