Behind the Art

The Art of Equine Fine Art Photography

By Susan McClafferty, Mareish Media LLC

Fine art photography is more than capturing an image—it is an intentional creation, designed to evoke emotion and transform a subject into art. Unlike traditional portrait photography, which aims to document a subject’s likeness, fine art photography is about interpretation, expression, and vision.

My work is not about taking conventional horse portraits. Instead, I capture horses as living, breathing sculptures, emphasizing their carved form, movement, and emotion. Through the careful use of studio lighting, dynamic compositions, and creative posing, I elevate their natural presence into imagery that feels both timeless and unexpected. Each image is crafted to inspire awe—whether through the intricate twists of a horse’s body, accentuating the muscles and lines with light, or the raw intensity of expression in their faces.

But this artistry does not happen in isolation. The creation of equine fine art photography is a seamless collaboration between photographer, horse handler, and horse—a carefully orchestrated dance where each plays a pivotal role in bringing a vision to life.

The Dance Between Photographer, Horse Handler, and Horse

Unlike human subjects who can hold a pose, horses require an entirely different approach. They are fluid, expressive, and ever-changing. The most breathtaking moments in equine fine art photography cannot be forced or dictated; they must be guided, anticipated, and captured in real-time. Every flick of an ear, arch of the neck, or shift in weight is a moment of artistry waiting to unfold.

The horse handler is a key part of this dance. Their role is not merely to keep the horse in place but to guide movement subtly allowing the horse’s natural energy and presence to shine. Too much control, and authenticity is lost. Too little, and the images lack intention. The best handlers understand how to suggest movement rather than force it, creating an environment where the horse feels confident, expressive, and free.

As a photographer, I constantly adjust—reading the horse’s expression, shifting angles, and modifying light—while the handler moves in harmony with both me and the horse. Sometimes, the most powerful image comes from a single refined movement: a delicate tilt of the head, a softly arched neck, or a dramatic flick of the tail. These moments are not accidents. They are the result of seamless teamwork between all three of us.

The Handlers Who Shape My Art

Over the years, I have worked with exceptional horse handlers, who understand the delicate balance between guidance and freedom. I’d like to celebrate a few who have played a unique role in shaping my most iconic images:

Christopher Webb is the master of sculptural poses. With a simple carrot or gentle cue, he coaxes horses into striking, statuesque shapes that feel almost otherworldly. Christopher was the first handler I worked with in the studio, and to this day, I would fly him anywhere just to be part of my photoshoots.

Katie Cox has an almost mystical bond with horses. She doesn’t need a photoshoot halter—horses seem to respond to her presence as if she’s speaking a language only they understand. She has a way of encouraging movement so naturally that it never feels forced, and some of my most beloved images, especially those of her stallion Lasting Looks in my Painterly Patterns series—were possible because of her intuitive handling.

Sandra Beaulieu is the bringer of joy. There’s something about her presence that makes horses light up and engage—expressive ears, eyes soft, energy and silliness engaged. Her ability to bring creative energy to every session elevates our collaborations to another level. Whether I need a regal, composed expression or a burst of playful motion, Sandra helps bring out that perfect moment of personality.

Each of these handlers brings a distinct talent to the creative process. Without them, some of my most unforgettable images would never have existed.

Training a Horse Handler for Fine Art Photography

My photography journey has brought into focus how important these handling skills are. Being a good rider does not mean someone can handle a horse well. Handling a horse for fine art photography is an art in itself. It requires skills beyond traditional horsemanship, blending patience, intuition, and a deep understanding of movement and light. The best handlers must master:

✔ Presence vs. Disappearance – Knowing when the horse needs gentle guidance and when to step back and let the moment unfold organically.

✔ Subtle Movement Shaping – Encouraging artistic poses without stiffening the horse’s natural fluidity or expression.

✔ Understanding Light – Staying out of the way of the lighting setup while still fulfilling the roles above, ensuring the horse remains the focal point of the shot.

Over time, the relationship between photographer, handler, and horse evolves into a finely tuned partnership—where everyone is attuned to the rhythm of the shoot, creating imagery that feels powerful and effortless.

Equine fine art photography is a team effort. It is not just about the photographer, and it is not just about the horse. It is about the relationship between photographer, handler, and horse the shared ability to sculpt a moment that is both dynamic and profoundly expressive.
