How Mobile Carriers Work: The Basics for Consumers

A mobile carrier, sometimes called a wireless carrier or mobile network operator, is a business entity that provides mobile communication services, including everything from voice calls and text messages to access to online data.

But how exactly do mobile carriers work? How are they different from mobile networks? And how should you choose the best mobile carrier for your needs?

Mobile Carriers vs. Mobile Networks

It’s perhaps easiest to understand mobile carriers when you understand the distinctions between mobile carriers vs. networks.

A mobile carrier is a business entity that owns and operates the physical infrastructure necessary for creating and maintaining the cellular network responsible for facilitating data transmission. You can think of a mobile carrier as the owner of a system of highways that can be used for travel – except in this case, the cars on the highway are packets of data transmitted from point to point. Optimum, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are examples of mobile carriers.

A mobile network, or mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), describes the technical infrastructure responsible for facilitating wireless comms between mobile devices.

There have been several generations of mobile networks, commonly referred to by their generation number – and the abbreviation “G.” The latest generation is 5G, and it’s poised to have 1.7 billion subscribers around the world by the end of the year.

What to Consider in a Mobile Carrier

These are some of the most important factors to consider when choosing a mobile carrier for your service needs:

·         Availability. Not all mobile carriers are available in all areas. In fact, some specifically operate within niche markets to avoid broader competition. You may not be able to secure your first choice overall.

·         Coverage and reliability. You’ll also need to consider coverage and reliability of services. In other words, are you able to get service everywhere you typically go? Does this service provider have a reputation for frequently dropping calls or experiencing other service disruptions?

·         Service plan offers. What types of service plans are available through this mobile carrier? Do they offer all the services you need in one package? Do they have flexibility, so you can customize the perfect package for your needs? What are the contract lengths, and are there any penalties for breaking contracts early? What mobile networks are available through these packages?

·         Terms and conditions. Similarly, you should look closely at the terms and conditions of these mobile services. Read the fine print and see if there are any hidden stipulations or drawbacks that you’ll need to consider.

·         Prices. Obviously, you’ll need to consider prices. But even if you’re on a relatively strict budget, the cheapest mobile carrier isn’t necessarily the best one for your needs. When comparing service packages, compare apples to apples, and make sure you’re getting the quality of service that you pay for.

·         Customer service. Things can and do go wrong with mobile carriers, so it pays to choose a mobile carrier that you can rely on for excellent customer service. If there’s a disruption in service, will you be able to get in contact with someone relatively quickly? If you have a billing question, are you going to be on hold for hours? Do you have confidence that this mobile carrier is going to do whatever it takes to resolve the issues you experience?

·         Extra fees. Consumers are often frustrated when they notice surprise extra fees on their bills – and quite understandably. However, you can usually review your service contract to see what types of extra fees might exist and how they function. Some service contracts may have so many additional fees they aren’t worth signing, and others may have perfectly avoidable extra fees.

·         Reviews and customer experiences. Pay close attention to consumer reviews and former customer experiences as well. Do people generally enjoy contracting with this mobile carrier? Or do they frequently have complaints? If so, what types of complaints do they usually issue?

·         Additional perks. You may also consider additional perks offered by your mobile carrier options. For example, some mobile carriers offer free bonuses or extra services to their customers. If you’re primarily shopping for wireless services, these extra perks aren’t a strict need, but they might be the perfect tiebreaker if you’re torn between two otherwise very similar options.

Making the Right Decision

Your choice in mobile carriers can have a big impact on the quality and speed of service you receive, as well as your access to the data transmission you require for both professional and personal needs.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that you can always switch mobile carriers in the future. If the quality of service is different than what you expected, or if you otherwise gain a reason to use a different mobile carrier, you can always switch.
