A forecast of the evolution of Ethereum
Ethereum is more than a virtual currency, having plenty of utility cases that have attracted the interests of investors hugely in recent years it has become the second-largest cryptocurrency in the sector. Ethereum is the world’s most important smart contract platform, which is one of the reasons why its future looks bright. Bitcoin might dominate the industry in terms of market capitalization, but Ethereum is the one that exploits the real potential of blockchain technology. According to crypto experts, Ethereum is a powerful digital asset and a superior network, which provides more benefits than the pioneer in the market.
Since its launch, Ethereum has gained huge attention from investors due to its innovative technology and explosive growth. The main difference between Ethereum and Bitcoin lies in the fact that Ethereum was developed to be more than a medium of exchange. It was created to be a platform with extensive smart contract capability that powers decentralized technology. Currently, Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap and a preferred option by plenty of people and investors worldwide. It’s no surprise that investors want to learn how to buy eth.
Ethereum is speeding up in the journey to improvement
Ethereum powers a vast ecosystem of decentralized technologies and has come a long way since its inception. It is a pioneer of smart contracts on blockchain networks and has created groundbreaking trends like non-fungible tokens (NFTs), decentralized finance (DeFi), Web3, GameFi and the Metaverse. However, the Ethereum growing adoption has raised concerns regarding energy consumption, scalability and transaction costs.
But, to address these issues, Ethereum’s developers have been working constantly on creating a series of improvements, generally known as Ethereum 2.0. These upgrades want to make Ethereum a more scalable, sustainable, efficient and secure network for real-world applications.
However, the journey wasn’t free of milestones
Ethereum 2.0 has a series of important upgrades designed to enhance the network’s performance across numerous aspects. This improved journey started with the Beacon Chain upgrade in December 2020, when the proof-of-stake (PoS) was introduced to the consensus mechanism of Ethereum. Then, several enhancements followed in 2021, including the London and Berlin upgrades, which introduced Ethereum Improvement Proposal 1559 (EIP-1559) and optimized gas fees. The Arrow Glacier and Altair upgrades further improved some of the issues of Beacon Chain’s functionality.
Following these upgrades, 2022 came with new changes with the introduction of Bellatrix, Paris and Gray Glacier upgrades, collectively known as “The Merge”. These changes have successfully transitioned Ethereum from a PoW consensus mechanism to a PoS alternative, where validators who stake ETH become responsible for generating the new blocks.
The Shanghai Upgrade
The latest Ethereum roadmap improvement was the Shanghai Upgrade, launched in April 2023. The update included EIP-4895 and allowed validators on the network to unlock their staked digital coins within the platform. The result of the upgrade? The associated rewards and the staked ETH become more accessible, increasing the ETH liquidity in the crypto market.
With this update, the Beacon Chain has also received a Capella upgrade by bringing up to date the withdrawal keys, which allowed validators to prepare for the Shanghai Update.
Danksharding is the next phase to improve Ethereum
Danksharding is the third most prominent upgrade stage in Ethereum, which is focused on a horizontal database scaling. The improvement will have Layer-2 rollups, distributing the responsibility of managing the existing data. Danksharding will not use the traditional sharding model but will have distributed data sampling across blobs. This will empower anyone to be a validator, decrease data storage costs and increase the scalability of Ethereum. The improved accessibility will lead to enhanced security and greater decentralization.
Proto-Danksharding or EIP-4844
Proto-Danksharding or EIP-4844 is the first step to having a full Danksharding. This upgrade aims to address the network’s scalability issues by expanding transaction volume. This will be made with a temporary solution that will increase the block size by 2 MB, thus making the platform more efficient and reducing gas fees for users.
EIP-4844 will introduce temporary data blobs that can seamlessly be linked and transmitted to blocks. The blobs will give inaccessible data to the Ethereum Virtual Machine and will automatically be deleted within a specific time frame, varying from one to three months. The update will offer end users more affordable transaction options and reduce rollup costs.
Full Danksharding
Full Danksharding originates from Proto-Danksharding, representing the ultimate evolution of rollup scaling. The phase will expand the blobs of the Proto-Danksharding from 1 to 64 and enable huge space for rollups to store their compressed transaction data. This improvement will offer seamless support for numerous individual rollups, and make millions of transactions per second (tps) a reality on Ethereum’s platform.
The expected timeline for the upgrade
The complete implementation of Danksharding could take several years, but the Proto-Sharding could be implemented sooner. EIP-4844 is already mature, with prototypes and agreed-upon specifications implemented on the client side.
What’s more to say
Ethereum’s future includes several upgrades and developments that could make the platform more secure, scalable and sustainable. All the improvements on the Ethereum 2.0 roadmap with the upcoming Danksharding upgrades will surely benefit Ethereum’s future positively and increase its popularity among users, developers and traders alike.
Ethereum is the second-largest crypto by market cap, created by Vitalik Buterin to offer more possibilities and extensive uses than Bitcoin. And indeed, Ethereum has been developed differently from its predecessor. If Satoshi Nakamoto wanted Bitcoin to function as a store of value, Vitalik Buterin launched a network that serves the financial sector and promotes decentralization.
Although Ethereum still needs to undergo several upgrades to improve its operations completely, this cryptocurrency is a very popular option because it is more than a digital coin and offers several utility cases. Ethereum has changed the crypto world with the help of new technologies that provide innovative decentralized applications to the public. Experts believe Ethereum can help democratize the real world and decentralize the Internet.
However, Ethereum is highly volatile, so before investing in this digital asset, you need to make sure you can manage the crypto world’s volatility to have good results.
