Modern breeding technology has expanded what’s possible in the sport horse world. Frozen semen, embryo transfer, and international shipping mean a single stallion or mare can produce more foals than ever before—and on a global scale.
But according to Dr. Julie Vargas of Spy Coast Farm, this rapid expansion has a hidden risk: loss of genetic diversity.
When Popularity Becomes a Problem
Historically, geography acted as a natural buffer against overusing specific bloodlines. Stallions typically bred mares in their own region, keeping the gene pool broader. Now, those limitations are gone.
Vargas pointed to a striking example from Europe: last year, one mare produced more than 100 foals in a single season through embryo transfer. “We’re actually losing genetic diversity,” she said, “because we can breed stallions to so many mares all over the world.”
That popularity can concentrate certain genes across the population and without the right information, breeders may be unknowingly passing on genetic disorders.
Building the U.S. Knowledge Base
European breeders benefit from centuries of recorded data and thousands of horses bred under established systems. In the United States, large-scale, long-term tracking is far less common. Many programs sell foals before they reach competition age, which means potential health or soundness issues may never be tied back to bloodlines.
At Spy Coast Farm, the scale is different. With more than 300–400 horses on the property, including full siblings and multiple generations, the farm can monitor animals from birth through training and, in many cases, into their later careers.
“That makes us a valuable partner for genetic research,” Vargas explained. “We have the mothers, the fathers, and the history to go with them.”
Seeing More, Knowing Less
Better diagnostic imaging has made it easier to spot anomalies in areas like the neck and back. Findings like these were often missed in the past. But, as Vargas and neurologic specialist Dr. Steven Reed noted, spotting an issue is not the same as understanding it.
Some abnormalities may be harmless, others may be linked to performance problems or soundness issues, and some could be genetic. Without research, it’s impossible to know which is which.
“We might have been breeding horses with these conditions for decades without knowing it,” Reed said. “Now that we can see them, we have to decide what to do with that information and that means more research.”
Learning from Success Stories
Vargas pointed to Fragile Foal Syndrome (FFS) as an example of how genetic research can lead to practical solutions. FFS, a fatal condition that causes extreme skin fragility in foals, can be avoided through simple testing.
“If a mare has the gene, you just don’t breed her to a stallion with the same gene,” Vargas said. “That’s the pie in the sky, to find the markers for other conditions so we can make those kinds of informed decisions.”
The Hard Conversation
One obstacle to progress is an unwillingness to talk openly about potential genetic faults. Vargas acknowledged that fear of damaging a bloodline’s reputation can make breeders hesitant to share information.
“It’s a lot easier to shove it under the rug and not talk about it and just keep selling horses,” she said. “But if we know what we’re dealing with, we can breed more wisely.”
Why It Matters to Everyone
These issues don’t just affect breeders. Genetic problems can shorten competitive careers, limit resale value, and create ongoing management challenges for owners and riders. As Piper Klemm noted during the discussion, “We’re living in a moment where technology is changing breeding faster than ever before. If we don’t pair that with knowledge and responsibility, we could be creating problems that take generations to fix.”
The tools to breed smarter already exist—comprehensive data, advanced diagnostics, and targeted genetic testing. What’s needed now is the industry-wide commitment to use them, so that sport horse breeding produces not only winners in the show ring, but also healthy, sound horses for generations to come.
