As the “Fire Murray Kessler from Wellington International” petition continues to grow, it has breathed new life and new interest in a petition last fall asking the USEF Board of Directors to issue a formal vote of no confidence in executive leadership of the federation, including CEO Bill Moroney.
Kessler, who was President of US Equestrian from 2017-2020, worked closely with Moroney for many years in the industry and together as CEO and President of US Equestrian during those years. Their close relationship has continued as Kessler has led Wellington International as CEO since 2024, expanding partnerships, sponsorships, and relationships between the two entities.
The Petition to the Members of United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), which has over 1,800 signatures, calls for a democratic approach to representing the membership. Started by member Lindsay Ayers this past October, the petition was created in desperation to attempt to have voices heard, for which there is no official mechanism to receive, review, and reform based on member feedback.
From the Petition: Reasons for No Confidence
- Loss of Member Trust:
USEF’s reputation among its members is at an all-time low. Many members feel unheard, unrepresented, and marginalized by decisions made without adequate consultation or transparency. Members have been accused by the Federation of using euthanasia drugs on their horses, with absolutely no proof and positive testing. It is impossible to trust an organization that would spread such an appalling and false rumor about their own membership. - Failure to Advance the Sport:
The current leadership has done little to foster growth, inclusivity, and accessibility within equestrian sport. Key areas—such as youth development, amateur support, and fair play—have stagnated or declined. - Lack of Accountability and Transparency:
Repeated controversies, inconsistent enforcement of rules, and questionable management practices have undermined confidence in USEF’s ability to govern effectively. - Disconnect Between Leadership and Members:
The executive team appears increasingly out of touch with the grassroots membership. USEF’s focus has shifted toward bureaucracy and image management rather than meaningful service to its athletes, trainers, owners, and participants.
